What an Instagram Follower Tracker Shows (and What It Can't)

What an Instagram Follower Tracker Shows (and What It Can't)

Instagram gives you two long lists, the people who follow you and the people you follow, and then leaves you to figure out how they overlap. An Instagram follower tracker does that overlap for you. Questions like "who doesn't follow me back?" or "who dropped off last month?" stop being a scroll-and-guess job and become a list you can actually read.

There's one catch that a lot of apps skate over, and it shapes everything else: some answers come from a single snapshot of your account, and some need two.

The four groups a tracker sorts you into

Every username on your account lands in one of these:

  • Mutual follows: you follow them, they follow you.
  • Not following you back: you follow them, but they aren't in your followers list.
  • Fans: they follow you, you don't follow them.
  • Unfollowers: they were in an older copy of your followers list and are missing from a newer one.

The first three come straight from one copy of your lists. The fourth only exists when you compare two copies made on different dates.

Non-followers and unfollowers aren't the same thing

Say you follow a local bakery, a musician and your cousin, and none of them follow you. That doesn't mean any of them left. The bakery and the musician probably never followed you in the first place, and your cousin might have switched to a new account and forgotten to follow you from it.

An unfollow is a change over time. Someone was on your followers list on the 1st of the month and isn't on it on the 30th. The only way to catch that is to hold on to the older list and put it next to the newer one. A decent unfollowers tracker tells you which two dates it compared. One that labels every one-way follow as an "unfollower" is just making the numbers look more dramatic.

How Follo Tracker gets your lists

Follo is an app for iPhone and Android. Getting your lists into it looks like this:

  1. You sign in inside the app on Instagram's official login page, so Follo never sees or stores your password.
  2. Follo reads your followers and following lists and saves them as your starting point.
  3. Each time you open the app, it reads the lists again and compares them with your last check.

Besides your lists, Follo has reports for unfollowers, accounts that don't follow you back, mutual follows and ghost followers. Follo never follows or unfollows anyone for you, and on large accounts reading the lists can take a few minutes.

If you'd rather not sign in to any app, Instagram also lets you download your followers and following as files, under Accounts Center, then Your information and permissions, then Export your information. Compare two of those downloads from different dates and you can do the same job by hand.

Who actually uses an IG follower tracker

Mostly ordinary people with ordinary reasons. A student who followed 900 accounts in their first year and now wants a feed they recognize. Someone who likes to keep a personal account mostly mutual. A candle maker selling on Instagram who wants to know whether a giveaway brought in followers who stayed, or ones who left the day the winner was announced.

For creators and small shops, the ability to track followers and unfollowers on Instagram over a few months says more than the headline follower count does. A count can stay flat while plenty of people come and go underneath it.

Is a followers checker the same as a follower tracker?

Mostly, but the two words point at slightly different jobs. An Instagram followers checker usually means a one-off check: look at your lists today and see who doesn't follow you back, which follows are mutual and who follows you without a follow back. A tracker keeps that check and repeats it later, which is what turns a snapshot into a record of who came and who left.

Two questions are worth asking before you use either:

  • Whose account does it check? Many online follower checkers are built for looking up other people's public accounts. They only see what's public and start counting from the day you add the account. Checking your own followers and following also works when your account is private, because you're the one signed in.
  • Does it keep anything? A checker that doesn't save your list can't tell you who unfollowed you next time. If unfollowers are what you're after, you need something that stores a baseline, whether that's an app or two data downloads you keep yourself.

What no tracker can tell you

Some things are simply not available, to any Instagram followers checker:

  • who viewed your profile, because Instagram doesn't record that for anyone to see;
  • anything inside a private account, including private posts and Close Friends stories;
  • the exact moment someone unfollowed you. You'll know it happened between two checks, and that's it.

If an app promises any of these, you've learned something useful about that app. The ones that ask you to type your password into a login screen of their own, in exchange for "extra features", are also the ones most likely to get your account flagged for a suspicious login.

Making it a habit that doesn't take over

A tracker is most useful when you check in now and then, not every morning. Pick a rhythm, maybe once a month or after a post that got unusual attention. Every check becomes the baseline for the next comparison.

Expect a few drops that have nothing to do with you. Instagram clears out spam accounts from time to time, and anyone who deactivates their profile disappears from your list until they come back.

If you'd like to see your own lists side by side, Follo, an Instagram follower tracker app, is on the App Store and Google Play. Your first sign-in becomes the baseline. From your next visit on, that's where the unfollowers show up.

Frequently asked questions

Does an Instagram follower tracker need my password?

A good one never collects it. In Follo you sign in on Instagram's official login page, so your password goes to Instagram and Follo never sees or stores it. If a tracker asks you to type your password into a login screen it built itself, that's a reason to look elsewhere. If you'd rather not sign in to any app, you can compare two Instagram data downloads yourself.

Can a follower tracker show who unfollowed me?

Yes, once it has two copies of your followers list from different dates. It looks for accounts that were in the older list and aren't in the newer one. With a single copy you can see who doesn't follow you back, but not who left. In Follo, your first sign-in saves that older copy.

Does Instagram have a built-in follower tracker?

Not really. You can see your two lists and a "Follows you" label on individual profiles, and professional accounts get follower growth numbers in their insights. None of that gives you names of people who left, or a sorted list of who doesn't follow back.

Why did my follower count drop but the tracker shows no unfollowers?

Usually it's timing. Your follower count is live, but a tracker's lists are a snapshot from its last check. If the drop happened before your first check or after your latest one, the comparison can't see it, so check again.
