How to Check Mutual Followers on Instagram, Both Ways

How to Check Mutual Followers on Instagram, Both Ways

Mutual followers on Instagram are accounts where the follow goes both ways: you follow them and they follow you. Everything else is one-way, and one-way runs in two directions. Some accounts you follow don't follow you back, and some people follow you without you ever following them back. Seeing all three groups side by side is the quickest way to understand who your account is really connected to.

The three groups in every account

  • Mutual. You follow each other. On a personal account, these are usually the friends, family and people you actually know.
  • Not following you back. You follow them; they don't follow you. Celebrities and brands live here, along with old follow-for-follow accounts that quietly dropped you.
  • Fans. They follow you; you don't follow them. Often people who found you through a post, a friend of a friend, or a customer of your shop.

Most people only ever check the second group. The third is just as interesting. It's where you find the old classmate you forgot to follow back, and for creators it's the real audience, the people who came for the content and not for a follow in return.

What "mutual" means on someone else's profile

Instagram also uses the idea in a different way. When you open another person's profile, the "Followed by" line under their bio names accounts you follow that also follow them. Tap it and you'll see the full list. That's mutual connections between you and them, which helps you work out how you know someone, but it doesn't tell you whether that person follows you.

For that, the button on their profile gives a clue. If it says Follow back, they follow you and you don't follow them. If it says Following, you follow them, and the only way to know whether they follow you is to search for them in your own Followers list.

How to check mutual followers by hand

For a small account, you can do this in the app:

  1. Open your profile and tap Following.
  2. Take each name and search for it in your Followers list. If it's there, the follow is mutual; if not, it's one-way.
  3. Now go the other way. Open your Followers list and look for the small Follow option next to a name, which marks people you don't follow back.
  4. Note the ones you want to act on as you go.

It works, but past a few hundred accounts it gets slow, and it's easy to lose your place halfway through.

The quicker way: let Follo sort both lists

Follo Tracker reads your followers and following lists and does the whole comparison in one go.

You sign in inside the app on Instagram's official login page, so Follo never sees or stores your password. Every account is sorted into mutual follows, people who don't follow you back, and fans you haven't followed back. No scrolling, and the last group is usually the one people have never really looked at.

Open the app again later and it will also show who unfollowed you since your last check, which is how you spot a mutual follow that has turned one-way.

What to do with the results

That depends on what your account is for. A personal account kept for friends might aim for mostly mutual follows and trim the rest. A creator shouldn't worry about a big fans group; that's what an audience looks like, and following everyone back would bury the accounts you actually care about in your feed.

A small business sits somewhere in between. A florist in a small town, for example, might go through the fans list and follow back local customers, venues and suppliers, since those relationships matter, while ignoring random accounts. The non-followers list is where you tidy up: brands you no longer care about and accounts that followed you only to unfollow a week later.

One thing to keep in mind: any list is a snapshot of the moment it was read. If someone changed their username or briefly deactivated their account around that time, they can land in the wrong group. When a result looks odd, check that one profile in the app before you act on it.

If you decide to unfollow a batch, do it gradually in the Instagram app. Unfollowing hundreds of accounts in one go can trigger a temporary action block.

You can get Follo Tracker from the App Store or Google Play. Your first check is enough to see all three groups; opening the app again a month later shows you which of them has changed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I see mutual followers on Instagram?

On someone else's profile, tap the "Followed by" line under their bio to see the accounts you follow that also follow them. For your own mutual follows, compare your followers and following lists, either by hand or with Follo.

Can I check mutual followers between two other accounts?

Not directly. Instagram only shows mutual connections relative to you. If both accounts are public you could compare their lists by hand, but no tool can see inside the lists of a private account.

Does Instagram show who doesn't follow me back?

Not as a list. You can check one profile at a time, which is why people use a tracker. Follo lists every account that doesn't follow you back in a single check.

Is it rude not to follow someone back?

No. Following is a choice about what you want in your feed, not a debt. Most people don't expect every follow to be returned, especially from creators and businesses.
